Food Lab Technician

The Lab Technician supports daily laboratory operations focused on food safety and environmental testing. This role prepares and analyzes samples to detect pathogens, allergens, chemical contaminants, and other hazards in food products and environmental swabs. The technician ensures accurate, timely testing in compliance with ISO 17025 and other regulatory standards.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Receive, log, and prepare food and environmental samples for microbiological, chemical, and allergen testing
  • Perform standard testing procedures, including (but not limited to) PCR, ELISA, plating, pH, moisture content, and water activity
  • Conduct environmental monitoring using swabs, sponges, and air sampling equipment
  • Maintain chain of custody and accurate documentation throughout sample handling and analysis
  • Operate and calibrate lab instruments, including incubators, pipettes, centrifuges, spectrophotometers, and analytical balances
  • Follow all laboratory SOPs, safety protocols, and good laboratory practices (GLP)
  • Maintain continuity amongst teamwork
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of lab workspace, equipment, and inventory
  • Record and report test results, lab data management systems
  • Participate in quality assurance activities, including proficiency testing and internal audits
  • Assist in maintaining ISO 17025 compliance through documentation, training, and continuous improvement

Qualifications:

  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in microbiology, Food Science, or a related field
  • 1+ year of hands-on laboratory experience preferred (academic, internship, or industry)
  • Familiarity with microbiological techniques and environmental sampling protocols
  • Knowledge of regulatory standards (e.g., FDA, EPA, ISO 17025) is a plus
  • Strong attention to detail, accuracy, and ability to follow SOP’s
  • CONFIDENTIAL AND PROPRIETARY
  • Basic understanding of lab safety and aseptic technique
  • Computer proficiency (Excel, LIMS, email, digital reporting tools)
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced lab environment
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings or weekends as needed

Physical & Work Environment Requirements:

  • Laboratory setting with exposure to biological and chemical materials
  • Use of PPE, including lab coats, gloves, and protective eyewear
  • Standing, walking, and repetitive hand movements for extended periods
